How to Screen for Gold
The line of holes should be spread out. One hole should not be directly in line over another hole in the way the sand and water are flowing. In this line all material has to pass above fiber –filled holes. These punch plates should not be too large to be switch by one man.
Its is essential that the plates be pulled down strongly on the carpet and the base of the rag plant. The tension forces the fibers of the carpet to set high up in the holes. To makes this necessary tightness, half –inch bolts are welded to the base of the rag plant along where the limits of the punch plates go. These bolts should be spaced about 2 feet apart and form a line of bolts up and down, in the line of the flow along the rag plant. Holes are drilled in 2/4 inch lumber so that the lumber can be located over the rows of bolts. When dropped into position the 2/4 covers the perimeter of the punch plate. Washers and nuts are then put on the bolts and the shamble is pulled down until it forces the cover into the carper.
Since the distance across most rags plants and the mass of the punch plate 2 or 3 rows of punch plate will be used diagonally on the rag plant. A single row of bolts and one 2/4 among 2 rows of punch plates can be used to embrace both rows of plates strongly down. Unscrambling gold from the sand on the rag plant is based on an extremely simple principle. GRAVITY. The heavier particles tend to be on the base of the material flowing down the rag plant, and they tend to move more gradually than lighter particles. Most of the sand moving down this trench is quartz feldspar, mica, and other moderately materials. A little percent frequently less than 2 percent, is attractive iron, or ‘black sand” an a particularly small percent is gold. It is the variation in the precise gravity of the gold and the other materials that makes division possible.
Specific gravity is simply the weight of an essence in relation to the weight of the same volume of water. Gold has a precise gravity of 19.3 consequently a cubic inch of gold is 19.3 times as heavy as a cubic inch of water. The lighter quartz division has a specific gravity less than 3. The black sand portion has gravity less than six. Gold, with a gravity of 19 .3 is more than 6 times heavier than the light quartz portion and more than 3 times heavier than the black sand fraction. This means that the material travel down the rag plant the gold will tend to mend into the carpet fibers faster and easier than the black sand and quartz. The instability caused by the riffling increases the possibility that the gold particles will settle and not be remove with the sand off the rag plant.
