Varieties of Quartz


  • Agate: Banded chalcedony, translucent.
  • Chalcedony: Any of the cryptocrystalline quartz, though generally only utilized for white or lightly colored material.
  • Jasper: Opaque chalcedony, impure
  • Onyx: Agate, when bands are straight, parallel, as well as constant in dimension.
  • Aventurine: Translucent chalcedony with smaller inclusions, mainly in the case of mica, that shimmers.
  • Tiger's Eye: Fibrous quartz, showing chatoyancy.
  • Rock Crystal: Clear and colorless.
  • Amethyst: Purple and see-through.
  • Ruby Quartz: Crimson glass-like crystal that attracts great quantities of solar energy.
  • Citrine: Yellow to reddish orange and greenish yellow.
  • Rose Quartz: Pink, transparent and in some cases shows diasterism.
  • Milk Quartz: White, see-through to opaque, in some cases shows diasterism.
  • Carnelian: Reddish orange chalcedony, see-through.
  • Smoky Quartz: Brown, see-through.
  • Morion: Dark brown and opaque.
