Everyone has at some time or another in recent months heard the fantastic get rich quick stories of those who were smart enough to have bet on the mining industry and the underground mining equipment industry due to the increase in the prices of not just the base metals but also the precious metals. It seems that the mining industry as a whole and all the underground mining equipment industries related to mining have been doing nothing but profit taking over the last couple of years. While this boom in the mining industry and all the peripheral industries and services including underground mining equipment has been a windfall not only for the companies involved but also for many smaller and developing countries which have benefited as a result of this incredible boom in the markets and consequent surge in metal prices. It has also once again brought to the fore the ever present dangers which constantly lurk in both the mines themselves and also in the mining industry in general. The danger in the mines themselves is not only very well known and documented but we also have constant reminders of these dangers with some very widely covered fatal cave-ins occurring recently and not only in countries with poor safety records such as China but also in the USA and Europe. But there also exist other not so obvious dangers for the would-be investor in the mining industry with some of the most common problems being labor disputes, environmental problems and dishonest entrepreneurs and businessmen. Labor disputes most often occur when a mining company doesn’t pay adequate wages or provide adequate coverage for health and or dangerous working conditions. The problems related to labor disputes have been increasing in recent months due to the dramatic increase in the profits of the mining industry as a whole due to high demand and high prices. Due to the increase in profits by the mining companies the workers have also wanted to share in the benefits brought about by the recent favorable market conditions. Environmental problems will always exist as long as there are minerals to be extracted from our environment. It is simply impossible to extract resources from the environment without having some impact on the surrounding environment. Although with the advent of comprehensive legislation and the voluntary implementation of best practices by mining companies the incidences of environmental catastrophes is decreasing and should continue to decrease and time goes on. This factor is one of the most vital things that must be looked at when deciding what mines or mining companies to invest in as an environmental disaster can not only cause the closure of a single mine but also adversely affect the whole mining industry in an area or even a whole country. So when investing in mining companies or underground mining equipment companies keep these last factors in mind for safe and happy investing. |
