The White Signal District
The White Signal district is located on the south part of the Big Burro Mountains. In order to get to this area, go northeast from Lordsburg on highway 90. You will see a good number of dirt roads that lead to a number of diggings. The deposits in this area have been worked on since the beginning of the 1880’s and the most gold bearing and productive areas are located in Gold Gulch and Thompson Canyon. Some gold has in addition been recovered at Gold Lake which is around ten miles east from Gold Gulch. Most of the gold in this area can be found in the washes. This was one of the areas that had a good amount of activity during the years of the Depression. Most likely the source of the placer deposits is located in the hard rock veins that are in the mountains that are close by. Dry washing and nugget shooting can be done in this area as well.
Hillsboro district The Hillsboro district is also known as the Animas Placers and it has been known for being a good place for dry washing. The deposits in this area can be located on the south and east side of the Animas Placers. Those interested in getting there simply need to take highway 152 west from highway 25. There are some dirt roads that will lead to the diggings. The east side of the hills ahs been known to be the most productive gold bearing areas but the biggest producer is the Gold Run Gulch. The placer deposits in this area were first discovered in 1877 and have continued to be worked on. There are some deposits that are good as well such as Wicks Gulch and Snake Gulch. You can also go to the area in between the Rio Percha and Dutch Gulch.
