The Vulture Gold Placers
The Vulture Mine is one of the most known of mines in Arizona. This mine was first discovered by a man named Henry Wickenburg in 1863.The Vulture Mine has produced over 300,000 ounces of gold. For those interested in getting to the Vulture Mine simply go west from the town of Wickenburg on highway 60 around seven or eight miles to the road where there is a sign that says Vulture Mine. From this road you will need to continue going for another fifteen miles or so to the site. The most productive area is in the Vulture Wash. The deposits are in the gravels and start at the Red Top Basin and keep on going for another two miles. This area has yielded a few bigger sized gold nuggets and metal detecting can be done as well as dry washing.
San Domingo wash The San Domingo wash is a favourite spot for dry washing. The San Domingo wash is a tributary of Hassayampa Creek and it runs out of the Wickenburg Mountains and goes to the north of the town of Morrison. The best gold bearing time in this area occurred in the 1870’s. During that time the Old Woman Gulch was a big time producer as well. For those interested in getting to the San Domingo wash simply take highway 60 northwest out of Phoenix around thirty two miles to Morrison. You will be able to find a road that goes north from Morrison that will leads to the deposits. San Domingo wash is also popular for the dry washing that can be done in the area.
Las Guijas placers The district of Las Guijas can be found on the southwest side of Tucson and is located close to the town of Arivaca. Those interested in getting to this area can go south to get out of Tucson on highway 19 around thirty miles to Arivaca Road and then go west. The deposits in this area have been worked on from time to time ever since the 1860’s. almost all of the washes in the area have gold in them and most of the gold that is found is fine however there have been cases of people finding nice sized nuggets here.
