The Lost Alvord Mine
Mr. Alvord was a prospector that discovered a rich ledge of gold during his search for the Lost Gunsight Mine. He was accompanied by some men that were known as the Mormons. Alvord decided to leave the camp one day and was gone for over seven days. When he returned to the camp, he brought along some black rich ore in gold. The group soon started to run low on food and supplies and needed to make a trip back to Los Angeles to purchase some more supplies and food etc. and the gold that had been found needed to be assayed as well. After the gold was assayed it turned out it was worth a lot more than they had imagined. When Alvord found out about this, he did not want anyone to get a cut of the finding until he made a deal with one of the men. The others angry threatened to kill him. Alvord returned to Death Valley in search for the ledge but was never able to find it again. Later on some prospectors passing by found his body. A man by the name of Jackson is said to have killed and robbed his outfit.
This area has many diverse stories, some of which are very well known of and others less known of, but all very interesting. Supposedly the Lost Jayhawker Cache of gold and silver coins is buried under a white chalk cliff located in the valley and the Lost River of Gold is said to have millions of dollars worth of gold in it. Those who are interested in coin hunting can also consider this area as they were supposedly hidden by the Indians after they had attacked and killed a very rich Mexican family and like this one, there are many, many more stories.
