The District of Goldstone

The Goldstone district used to be open to the public however it now belongs to the United States Naval Ordnance Test Station. Besides gold, this district also used to have copper and silver. A great deal of the mining activity that went on in this place occurred in 1915 to around the 1920’s and a good number of rich gold pockets were found.

Points of interest
California has many areas that are of great interest and anyone going to through the Barstow area should make sure to visit Calico which is a registered state historical landmark. Another very interesting sight is located in Black Canyon, which is close to the Opal Mountains and which has some of the most remarkable Indian petroglyphs that can be found in the whole state of California. People interested in getting to this area can take the Black Canyon Road from Hinkley and west on Barston on highway 58. This area has jasper, geodes, opal agate, and opals as well.

Tales of treasures
One of the most known of treasure tales has to do with the Gold Brick of Barstow that got lost. It was said that a gold brick was stolen from a shipmen of gold bullion at the Santa Fe Railway freight station. Supposedly the value of this brick was of $250,000, however there are others that say it was worth $25,000. To have been worth $250,000 in those days would have been simply too big for a person alone to carry on his own. Some years later after the robbery occurred, a man informed the police of Barstow that he has been prospecting in the desert for a number of months and that his partner had told him he was the one that had stolen the gold brick. The man that told this to the police was interested in helping to dig it up so he could then get a cut of it. The thief probably knew the other man had gone to the police because as soon as the police arrived, the man had left and disappeared. The thief has informed to his work partner that the gold bar had been buried in across the Mojave River right in the back of the freight station close to a rock coral.
