Techniques for Identifying Gold
There are a number of techniques for identifying gold. One of the most common ones is to grab a handful of dirt in your hand and wave it over the loop. If the handful of dirt makes a sound you should search for the gold. This technique though, seems to work better when a person is dealing with a bigger target and when the loop is not so sensitive. Keep in mind also that there are some detectors that are so sensitive that they will actually pick up the salt in a person’s body so it will be better to first test the detector on the palm of your hand. If the detector picks up a positive signal on your palm, try using your fingers. Then you can instead just grab a pinch of dirt and do the job this way but this technique obviously works better when dealing with bigger nuggets. Another method that is frequently used is known as the sprinkle method. In this kind of method the prospector will need to grab a handful of dirt with the assumed target and little by little sprinkle it on the top of the hoop. The prospector will need to make sure when doing it this way that the loop is horizontal on the ground so he does not lose his nugget by it falling onto the ground. Flakes of gold will latch themselves onto the loop if they consist of gold. The prospector will be able to hear a signal if it is gold by utilizing this method. The prospector will need to make sure though to sprinkle it over the loop little by little and get rid of the dirt that has already been tested on the loop before adding more on it. This works better for both bigger sized and smaller sized nuggets because both will cause a sound when they bounce off the hoop.
One other way this can be done is by simply taking handfuls of dirt little by little as the prospector checks the hole to see when the target disappears from the ground. After having made sure the target is in his hand, he will simply need to dump the dirt inside his pouch. Once this is done it will be necessary to use a gold pan in order to pan out the nuggets that may possibly be in there. Another way gold can be detected is by looking in areas that have soft soil in the mountain areas and by scooping the dirt into a plastic gold pan gradually. The pan then needs to be moved around so that the gold goes to the bottom of the pan; this comes about because the density of the gold will cause it to work its way down to the bottom as a consequence of the gravity. The prospector will then need to pass the pan over the hoop to see if there is gold there or not. If there is not any signal heard the prospector will need to check the soil again to see if the gold is still in there and then place the soil in the pan on the side.
