Tales of Treasures in Delta
There is a tale of a Mexican sheepherder that worked in the House Mountains who discovered a lost Spanish mine. Later on in the 1930’s a sheepherder brought a little bit of gold to the dentist in the town and told him he would sell it to him. The dentist readily accepted the offer and bought the gold and told the boy that if he found more that he was interested in buying it. The dentist asked the boy how he had obtained the gold but there was not a response back. Then several months had gone by and the sheepherder went back to the dentist and handed him a twenty pound bag full of gold. However, this was beyond the amount the dentist was able to sell so he did not buy it from him. The man took off and was never spotted again. There was a rancher in the area that said that at one time a sheepherder had showed him an old map with direction on how to get to Spanish mine in the mountains and told him that the Spaniards that used to own this mine were run off and by Indians and had left it all just sitting there to be found. There have been two different mines that have been found and which had leftovers of the equipment the Spanish miners used to use however, none of the mines ended up being very productive. |
