Steel Gold Pans
The steel gold pan comes in many different styles and can be found in different sizes that range from two inches wide to twenty-four inches wide. The depth of these pans varies as well as how slanted the wall is and how thick they are. There are some steel pans that have little indentations or riffles that are pressed inwards that are useful for trapping the gold.
Almost all the stamped or pressed indentations that steel pans consist of a slight bevel that goes from the inside to the outside, or a bevel that goes from the outside to the inside. These are what are known as riffles and they have different lengths; some are longer and extend all the way around the pan, while there are others that are short in length. Some people are not too crazy about steel pans due to the types of riffles they have and that since they have a rounded design it is not as effective. And when dealing with water, some believe that it causes the same amount of turbulence from the water on both of the sides of the riffles and this causes them to not be as effective when it comes to trapping the gold.
Obviously, prospectors with experience have the ability to pan with nearly any type of pan design, the idea of the riffles is to help make the job easier and it definitely helps beginners and helps make the job of an experienced prospector a lot faster.
