Small Scale Mining with Sluices

A sluice is a very straightforward thing to use. All that has to be done is the set up of the head which has to be a little higher than the tail. This can be practiced by setting the angle at ten degrees to start off with and observing if that works if not the person interested in learning should continue on until he gets it right. You will then need to dig a channel so the tailing that comes out of the bottom do not build up and cause it to get in the way of the flow of the water. The head needs to be placed close to the stream so that you are able to redirect some of the water in the stream into the sluice, and then dirt will need to be shoveled in the head end through the growler. The water will take care of rinsing the dirt away at the same time as the gold gets stuck in between the riffles. You will need to keep on shoveling and sluicing until the sluice is full of gold or until you become tired of it. After the sluice is full or the person is not able to continue on any further, he can stop the water and the get gold out and this can be done by either picking it out, amalgamating it with mercury or by scraping the sand out from behind the riffles and then using the pan to pan it. Inside the sluice box, a mixture amount of riffles might be used, depending on the usefulness of the material and whatever the small scale miners prefer using. The riffles, which go on the bottom, are frequently set diagonally in the box, but they can also work well when positioned lengthwise. These can be made out of wood, or of strap or angle iron, or an arrangement or combination of both of them. Straight, round poles or a pattern of square blocks or stones can be used as riffles additionally. Something else that can be used is rubber or plastic strips. Determination and steadiness is crucial when a small scale miner is going to get involved in more of a widespread operation, so wood can be reinforced with metal. Expanded metal, heavy wire screen, or cocoa mats all work very well as riffles for trapping fine gold.
