Sluice Coverings
In order to be more efficient an area of the sluice should have a lining on the bottom that consists of some sort of canvas, rug, burlap or corduroy. This material is very useful because it helps to recover the finest particles of gold. In order to be efficient, the lining material should be placed in such a way so that it is simple to remove, one such way of doing this is by stapling it down with a heavy duty stapler like the ones that are used to place in wall boards.
There is a different of view on how much of the sluice should be lined and what type of material should be used. However this is only some thing that a person with experience and who knows the fineness of gold can do and it is it up to each individual to decide what works best for him. In most cases, the last couple of riffles are lined even though some people line the whole box.
During different periods, and whenever you are shutting down the place where the material will dry out, you should make sure to remove and clean it. This can be done by swirling it around in a bathtub of water and panning the material that settles down on the bottom of it. When the lining material cannot be used anymore, you should burn it and then pan the ashes. Throughout a sluicing operation make sure you watch the lining to make sure that it does not clog up or get slick with the clay or black sand. If this were to occur, it would cause the fine gold to wash over it and this means you need to change to another material.
