Sand Obstruction when Dredging

Something else that can arise and cause problems with the bucket or barrel used to increase or quality of water intake is that it could turn into a natural trap for the sand flow it was supposed to get rid of. The barrel can turn into a trap when the top opening is put near the level where the sand is being carried. When water goes into the barrel it does not fall inside from the top as you might think or suspect it does. Instead a low-pressure area is created inside of the barrel due to the fact that the flow into the barrel is at a higher speed than the pressure of the rest of the stream. Due to the fact that water that is under pressure moves into different directions with the same amount of pressure, it not only causes the water on top of the barrel to flow into it but the water on the sides is also pushed upwards to unite the flow to the barrel.

If the opening of the barrel is close to the bed, the flow sand can get entrained inside the upward flow where it goes inside the barrel and cause damage to the pump a lot more than if the barrel was not used at all to begin with.

Besides keeping the quality and quantity of the water the dredger also needs to be able to control the flow of sand that goes through the tube. There are two ways the suction tube can get ruined enough to where the dredging processed is stopped completely. One such way can occur when it is overloaded and the other can occur when it is obstructed. Overloading is the easiest problem to deal with so we will focus on this problem first.
