Prospecting Unit Metal Detector
One other kind of detector is the specialized prospecting unit. These types of detectors also come with a manual ground balancing or an automatic tracking ground balancing. There are also some that will routinely discriminate and do away with iron trash. These types of detectors obviously have a higher frequency and have better ground canceling controls.
In the past there were not a lot of metal detectors available, even though there used to be some they simply were not made for specialized prospecting, at least not the kind of prospecting that is done these days. There used to be a good number of detectors that were initially made for coin hunting and detecting and these were able to cancel mineralized ground and they certainly served their purpose because they were useful when it came to finding gold and as a matter a fact a great deal of gold was found with this kind of detector.
Bear in mind that if you do not have a target discriminator or identifier on the unit you are using, you are going to need to dig out all the targets if you are in fact concerned in finding the gold. After a long time at it there are prospectors that say it is not easy to tell the difference between iron and things that are not iron by just listening to the sound. It seems as if gold nuggets have more of a sharper peak to them and a softer sound. Targets that are iron in general have more of a flat or a harsher sound to them. Tracing the size of a target is also a hint; nonetheless there are nuggets that are so large in size that it would without a doubt not be a good idea to walk away from them.
If you do not own or have access to a discriminator or an identifier you will need to learn how to do this discrimination yourself if you are interested in those nuggets and you will need to learn how to interpret targets; and keep in mind obviously, if you are ever in doubt, you should beyond doubt dig it out to see. Remember also that there is not a machine that does the job entirely when it comes to different detectors. Remember also that the size of a nugget as well as the depth it is in inside the ground can still cause a detector to not make a good reading. Another good way also to check to see if the detector you have is trustworthy is by doing a few nugget tests on the ground.
A number of the different kinds of places you can go to in order to locate gold for example is the top of the ridges of mountains where the winter and spring rains took care of washing off some of the overburden. You can also go to the spring and river banks. Some well-situated areas to go to also, are the areas where the bedrock is crumbly and where crevices and cracks are very obvious since these types of places produce gold. The operating frequency was also modified in order to enhance the sensitivity of locating gold in the ground. Obviously when these new developments were made, the metal detector industry took a new place in the market completely and sold very well. One thing that these gold detectors have in common is that they all have higher transmitting frequencies then the multipurpose detectors. They in addition have more ground balance potential and different steps you should avoid like overload in grounds that are highly mineralized.
Later on the manufacturers of metal detectors understood that higher transmitting frequencies could reach the smaller areas, and with areas with gold that were being worked on more and more, every target, no matter how small it was, was something worth checking out. Keep in mind though that frequency is not the only thing a detector has to have. There are different kinds of units that can be used but most of them make use of ground canceling systems, however there are additionally some auto tracking units too. It’s up to each individual prospector to decide what he is interested in getting and what would be best and more comfortable for him.
