Placer Gold Mining

A prospector can dig into a deposit to test it at different depths for placer gold that might be caught in dense layers in most cases. Gold can also sometimes be found far on top of the bedrock and the gravel is tightly packed so as to keep it from sinking in the water. However, remember that in most cases, gold is very heavy and it has a tendency of sinking down. When gold does fall, it usually embeds itself in fine cracks and fissures and gets trapped. There are many gravel deposits that are rich in placer gold that have not been looked at or discarded as a possibility because a lot of people mistakenly believe that gold can only be found on bedrock. Looking for gold in placer or alluvial form can be done in several different ways. One of the most convenient ways is by testing an area with a gold pan that is designed for dry panning. You should then save the concentrates you have recovered so that you can inspect it later on and separate it by wet panning it. In general placer deposits are formed by the effects of the weather on a gold field that is outcropping. After the outcropping has been exposed for a number of years and decades, erosion causes little pieces to start breaking off. Water runoff and gravity then carry them downhill. There are still undetected pieces of ore lying on the mountainside, however most of them are carried down into streams by the water where the bigger pieces become imbedded in the sand and gravel and this releases gold from the lode. Since the gold is heavy it sinks down and tends to work its way down vertically to bedrock of the stream then causing it to become trapped in crevices and cracks, then the gravel and lighter sand sweep over it because of the activity of the water.
