Other Types of Riffles
Pole types of Riffles Most weekend prospectors will not use the transverse type of riffle unless they need to break up gravel. There are a couple options as far as economy is concerned and if you want the job done without having to spend a lot of money you can consider the pole or log type of riffle. These can run either way of the sluice however the miners in the past used to prefer using them in the lengthwise placement. There was a lot of discussion that took place between the early miners, however the people that used them claimed that the circular shape was the best when it came to having the water have the boil effect and settle finer particles of gold.
Rock types of Riffles Rock riffles were created for pretty much the same reason the pole riffles were designed which was because they were easy to get ahold of, simple to make and did not cost anything. These were most likely the first riffle to have ever been used by man in order to get gold. It is not easy to say with accuracy the exact size or shape of rock that should be used due to the fact that rock sluices are usually built at the spare of the moment and from what is available. The place where the rocks go also changes and it highly depends on personal preference. Some miners used to use bigger rocks that were spaced out widely and ran a good amount of water past them in order to break up material that was cemented, while there were others miners that would quarry the rocks into the shape of riffles.
Other types of Riffles There really is not any end to the type of riffles that can be used and there is not any end to the materials that can be used as well. If you have access or can get them, another thing that can work as really good riffles are railroad tracks and they can be used either lengthwise or crosswise. There are people that have used railroad ties, old parts of cars, cut up tires, or just about anything you can think of that will create an obstacle. A weekend prospector that discovers a rich bar and does not have anything else but his gold pan should either buy a sluice or should have someone build one for him. Remember that these are opportunities that should not be passed up as someone else just might find that specific spot, so get moving with it.
