Multipurpose detectors with automatic ground balancing, tracking, audio & visual digital discrimination
If you are planning a prospecting trip there are several options in the Mother Lode country of California. Just remember that it is important to master keeping the detector tuned to the ground mineralization and to be slow and careful when searching. Remember also that discriminators are used to get rid of the need for digging a great amount of debris that can often times be found all over the place from previous miners. Remember that the trick to mastering the use of a metal detector is to make it work for you and your specific need. In the high desert in California there are places with ancient ditches that are cut by a lot of gully washers and patches of bedrock that are exposed. These kinds of spots can be very good to work in specifically after the winter rains had moved the over burden down and around. In this type of area a prospector could choose to use a detector with an automatic ground cancel feature. There are some that have a touch padding that says “air” on it in with the loop held in the air, and then a padding that says “ground” on it wit the loop held on the ground. When the loop is swung it cancels the ground. This type of detector is controlled by a chip that is sometimes set with an autotune feature. If it does have this feature, it has to be kept in movement when the searching is occurring. It is not possible to stop the loop on top of the target because otherwise the signal goes away. Usually when these types of detectors are used the prospector needs to keep an open eye on the places where the sound gets louder and then dig up those spots.
Remember when prospecting to always check the ground to see how much mineralization is in it. This is not something that can always be done with an automatic detector and will be simpler if it is done with a manual ground canceling detector. Check to see how far clockwise the ground cancel control needs in order to be set. The higher the number is set, the higher mineralization is in that specific area. A prospector can also check the mineralization of the ground by jabbing the magnet end of his pick into the sandy soil of the gully to as to see the black sand it brings up. It’s difficult to believe that black sand can actually hide gold in it. If a prospector runs into this type of sand he should use his test nugget under this soil to test it and not on the top of the soil.
