Tips for successful prospecting The Dale area has some interesting places to do prospecting in such as around the Morongo Valley. This is one of the areas that have been listed as a gold district by the State Department of Mines and Geology. The mines used to be located in the mountains on the west side of the town and this place, like most gold districts has its lost mine story as well. It is said that the early padres had a rich mine close to this area that they worked on for a good number of years before they were run off by the Indians. It is said that later on around the 1870’s a miner went past the old shaft and was able to take some samples from the vein and it assayed to being around $1000 per ton. However, nobody is really sure of what happened to this miner or to the mine.
Anza Borrego area The Anza Borrego Desert is not actually a gold bearing area but there have been some important gold events that took place in the area. This area does have some placer and lode gold though and some of the most interesting stories of gold have come from this place. To get to the area of Anza Borrego you will need to take the San Bernardino Freeway, Interstate 10, to the city of Indio. From there you will need to take highway 86 south from Indio over to highway 78, from highway 78 go west until you arrive to the Anza Borrego State Park.
