Looking for Gold Placers
Placers can be found pretty much anywhere where lode gold can be found in hard rock deposits. The gold that is found in these areas is set loose through weathering, glacier and stream action. It is then carried down by gravel and water to a specific spot where it then, because of its weight, deposits itself or becomes concentrated in the whole course of action. In most cases the gold does not advance very far from its original source therefore knowing the location of lode deposits can be very helpful for prospectors. Gold can also be associated with copper and might also form placers close to the copper deposits, but this is not something that happens a lot. There are certain geological events, such as the rising and lowering of land like as the surfacing of the mountains and the circling by the wind and water, can bring about long bouts and repeated cycles of concentration and erosion, and in the places in which these processes has taken place the placer deposits can become enriched. There are ancient river channels, some of which can be found in current mountains and some river bench deposits have some gold bearing gravels that have gone through a number of events like weathering concentration and erosion, and have then been concealed at least in part by other deposits as well as volcanic material. The residual deposits that are formed right in the vicinity of source rock are usually not the most productive ones; however this is not always the case as there are some exceptions and occasions in which veins that supply the gold were very rich. The reworking of gold bearing materials through the action of streams will bring about the right kind of concentration that is needed for exploiting.
