Longwall Mining and Roof Bolters

Longwall Mining
In the case of longwall mining, which is very alike to continuous mining, the operators of longwall machines are in charge of running big machines that have rotating drums that routinely shave ore and then place it on a conveyor. All at once, hydraulic jacks take care of reinforcing the roof of the tunnel. As ore is cut, the jacks are hydraulically hoisted frontward, and take care of providing support to the roof as they move along. There are a lot of other workers that are required to control safe and competent underground mines. Before miners are allowed to go underground, a mine safety inspector is in charge of checking the work area for such dangers like that of loose roofs, unsafe gases, and insufficient ventilation. If the standards of safety are not gone along with, when the standards of safety are not followed, the inspector does not allow the mine from producing until conditions are made safe. The operators of rock dust machines are in charge of spraying the mine walls and floor to hold down dust, which can get in the way with breathing.

Roof bolters are in charge of working the machines that operate the machines automatically place roof support bolts in to place so as to avoid cave-ins of the roofs, which just so happens to be the main cause of mining injuries. The Brattice builders build doors, walls, and partitions in tunnel passageways to force air into the work areas. Shift bosses take care of supervising all the operations that are going on at the work site. When surface mining is done, most miners operate very big machines that either get rid of the earth above the ore deposit, or dig and load the ore onto trucks. The number of workers that are necessary to operate a surface mine mainly has to do with the amount of overburden that exists, or the amount of earth, above the ore seam. In a lot of surface mines, the overburden is first drilled and blasted. In the case of dragline operators, whom are also known as overburden stripping operators then take care of scooping the earth away so as to expose the coal or metal ore. Certain draglines are known to be some of the biggest land machines that exist.
