Large Scale Operations with Sluices

Prospectors or miners that have experience will work out the ground with regular cuts and in an organized way. In cases when the miners are working in areas that are three or four feet in depth, these areas normally excavated in benches so as to make the job of digging easier and to allow the higher layers to be lifted at the minimum height for shoveling. In cases where the gravel being worked on is shallow, wheelbarrows are utilized. One other way is to shovel the gravel onto a conveyor belt that automatically discharged into a trommel, and get rid of the big sized material and working the smaller material substances through the sluice. In cases when there are two or more people working in the same cut, the height of the following benches will largely depend on the character of the material that is getting dug and the distance the gravel needs to be lifted. A sluice can be kept on the surface of ground that has not been worked on or supported on bents on the other side of the cut. Once the first cut has been done, the boxes will then be supported on bents on the ground under them is dug out. On other areas the box can be placed on the bedrock and the dirt shoveled inside the head of the sluice from small transverse cuts at the top end of the pit. In most cases work starts on the lower end of the deposit in order for the bedrock to be kept drained, and then goes across the deposit in normal cuts. The length and place of these cuts will largely depend on the local conditions. While the heavy sands and gravels build deposits between the riffles in the sluice, it might be necessary to mix these in order to avoid them from packing and then having an override of gold particles. It is a good idea to use a tool for this work such as a pitchfork. The bigger stones that become lodged in can be removed in the same way.
