Hip Mount Kit

Almost all gold prospecting units these days are very easy to use, are compact and do not weigh a lot allowing the prospector to work in a standard hand held configuration. In other words, the prospector is able to have the control box placed directly on the rod that is connected to the loop. This means the whole unit is put together and in some cases there are people that believe that is too heavy; especially if you have to hold on to it all day long.

There are different types of carrying options that are available with all the different brands of detectors that exist. A lot of them have the control box adjusted on the belt around the waist and just the arm piece connected to the loop is swung over the ground. If you are intending on getting a multipurpose detector, keep in mind that it is bigger and much more bulky and for this reason they are usually adapted with hip mount kits so that you will be more comfortable and to make it easier to work with. A great number of these kits are not too pricey and are a good option to invest it.

So once you are clear about how to use your metal detector and have all the equipment ready and obviously after you have practiced how to use all your stuff and gadgets, you will then need to get the stuff ready in your vehicle with all the different things and supplies you will be needing for a prospecting adventure.

It had previously been mentioned that metal detectors that are used specifically for gold prospecting are quite similar in how they need to be controlled and operated. Obviously in order to learn how to operate them exactly will need to be discussed directly with the dealer or you can read the factory manual. There are two basic types of detectors that are generally used, these consist of the purpose discrimination and some of them have a meter or screen on it in order to help you be able to identify targets that have been discriminated.

The other type of detector is the specialized prospecting unit. These types of detectors also come with a manual ground balancing or an automatic tracking ground balancing. There are additionally some that will automatically discriminate & eliminate iron trash. These types have a higher frequency and have better ground canceling controls.

In the past there were not a lot of detectors available; there used to be some but they were not for specialized prospecting. There used to be a lot of detectors that were originally made for coin hunting and detecting and these were able to cancel mineralized ground and they definitely served their purpose because they were useful when it came to finding gold and a great deal of gold was found with this type of detector.

Remember that if you do not have a target discriminator or identifier on the unit you are using you are going to need to dig out all the targets if you are truly interested in finding the gold. After a long time at it there are prospectors that say it is difficult to tell the difference between iron and things that are not iron by the sound. It seems as if gold nuggets have more of a sharper peak to them and a softer sound. Targets that are iron in general have more of a flat or a harsher sound to them. Tracing the size of a target is also a clue however there are nuggets that are so big that it would certainly not be a good idea to walk away from them.

If you do not have a discriminator or an identifier you will need to learn how to do this discrimination yourself and learn how to interpret targets; and remember obviously, if you are ever in doubt, you should definitely dig.

Remember that there is not a machine that does the job perfectly when it comes to different detectors. Keep in mind that the size of a nugget as well as the depth it is in inside the ground can still cause a detector to make a mistake. A good way also to check to see if the detector you have is dependable is by doing a few nugget tests on the ground.

Some of the different types of places you can go to in order to find gold for example is the top of the ridges of mounds where the winter and spring rains took care of washing off some of the overburden. You can also go to the spring and river banks. Some convenient places to go to are the areas where the bedrock is crumbly and where crevices and cracks are noticeable because these types of places produce gold. Don’t forget also to look under the limbs of bushes etc. and remember that all of this can be done more easily with a small loop.

After the modern gold rush in Australia at the beginning of the 1980’s where metal detectors came into the picture exclusively made for gold prospecting. These new metal detectors had all the needed and necessary features and capabilities and little by little they started entering into the department stores and were sold at a larger scale. Obviously, like today, there were different types of detectors some of which worked more effectively then the others but they were all useful at finding gold.

As time went by the manufactures of the different detectors started adding on little features to them and enhancing them. This gave the new detectors better performance. Different sized loops were also developed so they could target larger areas as well as others for deeper areas etc. the discriminators were also modified for better identification of targets as well. The operating frequency was also modified in order to improve the sensitivity of finding gold in the ground.

When these new improvements were made, the metal detector industry changed completely and sold very well. One thing that these gold detectors have in common is that they all have higher transmitting frequencies then the multipurpose detectors. They also have more ground balance potential and different steps you should avoid overload in grounds that are very mineralized.

Later on manufactures realized that higher transmitting frequencies reached smaller areas, and with areas with gold that were being worked on more and more, every target, no matter how small it was, was something worth checking out. Keep in mind though that frequency is not the only thing a detector has to have. There are different types of units that can be used but most of them utilize ground canceling techniques but there are also some auto tracking units too. It’s up to the prospector to decide what he or she wants.
