Gold Treasure Tales in Sierra County
There are a few different treasure tales in the Sierra County area of gold lakes. A lot of people actually claimed to have found different lakes that were lined with gold, however no one is really sure if these stories are true or not but when many people say they had found something there has got to be some reality in the story.
Traveling in the past was not a very easy task and the location that were marked with natural landmarks would often times change from one day to the next and it was then very difficult to find the same location again. These places might have been covered by a mudslide etc.
Poker Flat supposedly has a lost treasure. It was said that a man whose name was Mr. Peyron who was the owner of a little store in the area had accumulated a good amount of gold from the miners. Mexican bandits then killed Mr. Peyron, however the gold he owned was never found. The miners claimed they had seen him sometimes creep out at night and that he would carry a leather bag with him and climb up the hills that were located behind his store. The miners also said that he would then come back with nothing in his hands. It’s possible he buried his gold there but it has not been found yet.
The Feather River Feather River is a favorite location and portable dredging is allowed in certain areas, however you will need to find out before doing so. New restrictions are always coming up and you do not want to find yourself stuck in problems during a camping trip or an outing. The areas around Nelson and Yellow Creeks were very productive areas. There are also a good number of creeks that feed the different forks of the river like the Hungry, Indian, Dogwood, Willow, Claremont etc.
