Gold Search Coils

There are two types of search coils that are most commonly used and can be easily found for using with prospecting instruments, these are the concentric loop and the co-planar loop. These two search coils have windings that are placed on the same plane, however only the concentric windings are centered on the same vertical axis. As a result, concentric search coils produce an advantageous a wanted, evenly distributed electromagnetic field. You will certainly not have as many problems when using a search coil.

There are also newer elliptical search coils that can be used for all types of searching and are especially useful for using in rocky gold fields. The elliptical search coils provide the prospector with the same type of advantages the older ones offered but they are now able to search deeper and are more precise.

If you are considering nugget hunting you may want to consider getting the small search coils as these are more effective. The advantage to these also is that they are not heavy and easy to handle, however keep in mind that they are better for finding teensy nuggets.

Bear in mind that you should compare several models the right way by using the same size coils. Depending on what type of metal detector you choose to get, you will need to make sure that it has several sizes and shapes of coils available for it. The most standard size is the 8 ½ inch circular search coil and this is useful for almost all types of prospecting. The bigger ones are better for prospectors that are looking through black sand deposits, big nuggets that are buried deep, or ore veins. At one point it was said that large coils were not useful for detecting teensy nuggets, but they can be found with these.

There are also metal detectors that can be utilized with elliptical shaped coils and they are best suited for using in rocky areas because the circular search coils simply don’t fit in these areas.

Remember that although it has been done, in general the older metal detectors are not useful for searching for nuggets especially when you are in an area with highly mineralised soils. It is true that bigger nuggets have been found with them, but they are not useful when it comes to searching for the smaller nuggets and its very likely that a lot of smaller nuggets have been overlooked in the past because of this factor. If this has happened to you to the point where you are no longer interested in searching for nuggets anymore, we highly recommend you try again with the metal detectors we have available now.

The modern metal detectors we have these days have precise ground balancing capabilities and have high sensitivity and are able to balance out all the effects of negative mineralization. These detectors allow you to be able to find gold nuggets in areas that have mineralised rocks with no difficulty.
