Gold Placer Areas

There are certain areas in which deposits can come about from flooding and washing out of the intermittent streams such as in deserts. When the material washes off of the slopes and goes into the streams, it becomes a little bit stratified. The gold becomes concentrated in streaks along with other metals that are heavy, in where the black, magnetic, magnetite with iron can also be found. Gold is often times found still stuck or half way stuck onto or inside its holding or original rock but it might still have a whitish to grayish vein quartz or another rock material that is attached to it or covering it. When the gold works its way down the stream, it eventually becomes loosened from the rock that is surrounding it as well as flattened by the consistent banging and pounding that occurs with the gravel it is traveling through. So much pounding from the gravel will eventually turn the gold into little flakes and teensy particles given that the little flat pieces start to break. When this takes place with an additional element like tellurium for example, some gold cannot be recognized right away by the way it can normally be recognized, which would be its color and malleability. When weathering occurs, it can cause the gold to become coated with a crust, like that of iron oxide for example, which will make it look sort of rusty. In operations, the rusty gold, which is resistant to amalgamation with mercury, has often times been overlooked by prospectors who were not being careful. As has been said previously, in some cases the best placer deposits are not necessarily the ones that take place close to the original source. A lot of it is directly associated with what occurred to the gold during its course, such as the weathering and the natural forces of nature. In the case of those that are doing small scale operations, stream bed placers are the best to go after. However, the gravel terraces and the benches that are at the top of the streams, along with the ancient river channels that are in many occasions hidden by deposits that occurred later, are possible sources of gold. There are different types of placers that come included with the outwash areas of streams where they go into another body of water, the ones at valleys, and the ones that are in front of the ocean where the beach deposits can be formed by the action of the waves and the currents of water. In the case of desert areas, the placers might be along the gulches or the arroyos, or might be in the fans or cons under the narrow canyons.
