Gold Mining in the Alaska Areas

The task that Alaska’s gold mining has played in the past and present is something to take note of. Gold is mined in open pit operations close to Fairbanks. There are indications of gold all around. Gold was first discovered in Southeast Alaska in the 1870s. Gold was first discovered close to Sitka in 1872 and the second discovery was made in 1876 in Windham Bay. These finds followed the discovery of gold close by in British Columbia in 1861. The discovery of gold brought thousands of precious metal seekers to Alaska and the Yukon. Gold strikes in the Klondike and near Nome took prospectors to Alaska during the 1890s. Many of these prospectors took steamships to Skagway in Southeast Alaska, where they initiated their trail by land to the Klondike. Further west along the coast, Valdez was another port of entrance for Klondike miners and it also has a gold rush trail, and has now been restored, in Keystone Canyon and Thompson Pass. The gold rush in Alaska was the boost that many communities needed to start out. Fairbanks turned into an essential supply area and turned into one of the centers of mining activity after gold had been discovered in 1902 and there continue to be mining operations done in the Fairbanks area until this very day. One of the biggest gold and copper deposits were found close to Lake Iliamna and it has been estimated to have contained over 30 million ounces of gold along with other minerals such as copper, and molybdenum which turned it into the largest gold deposit in North America. As far as weekend prospectors, amateurs and professional miners are concerned, they can be found panning for gold in diverse parts of the state. The placer mining operation at Ester close to Fairbanks is number three in the United States and this has to do with searching for gold deposits of gravel, usage of sluice boxes and gold panning. Those interested in what Alaska gold mining has to offer should do previous research and study on the area. There are diverse ways in which one can obtain such information quickly and these include in books, sites, libraries or talking to experts.
