Gold Diving Equipment

In the case of a person that is thinking about gold diving, you will need at least the following equipment for free diving. Besides having your wet suit, weight belt, face mask, snorkel, and insulated gloves (which is extremely important to protect your hands from the cold and from getting cuts and scrapes) you will also need:

  • Gold suction gun
  • Crevice tool
  • Gold pan
  • Gold bottle
  • Tweezers
  • Lightweight prospector’s pick
  • A lightweight pry bar

The first step when getting into this type of work is to find a crevice or something that looks like one. In many occasions the loose sand and other light material can be cleaned from the crevice by moving your hand and “fanning” it. The turbulence you will cause will move the lighter material out of the way and will leave the gravel and rocks uncovered.

If you locate a crevice that does not have rocks tightly crammed inside of it you should avoid these areas. It is very likely this area has already been worked on and it would just be best to leave this area alone in order for you not to waste your time.

Keep in mind that it will be necessary to get all the way to the bottom of a crevice in order to find gold. In order for you to do this you will need to remove all the impacted material, and this calls for leveraging. This is why a pry bar and pick are necessary items.

After all the material has been cleaned from the crevice, it will get easier to take the gold out with big pair of tweezers. But if the crevice proves to be too deep for you to be able to use the tweezers, little flakes and grains of gold could probably be easily taken out with the suction gun. The good thing about the suction gun is that you are able to get to things that are usually out of reach.

A good amount of gold diving is done in water that is three to six feet deep. At times a diver will want to work in a hole that is fifteen to twenty feet deep however this is not very common.

While it is true that some of the deep potholes and areas that have a lot of weight in them have given a great amount of riches, however in most cases if a deep area of the river has a lot of gold in it, it also has big boulders that weigh hundreds of tons and that will need to be moved in order to get to the gold. This process is not something a lot of people look forward to though and especially not for someone that is new at it.

For those that have experience at this work, contrary to the opinion of many gold divers, the portions of the river that have fast water in it often times give out great results for the free diver due to the fact that less burden exists and this leaves the crevices out in the open and provides easier access. The water will continue to sweet the lighter sediment out of the way.

While it is true that this does seem like an extensive amount of work, we are forgetting to fill you in on the exercise and fun this job can give to you. There are many people that consider prospecting a sport and say it is the most exciting experience that can exist.
