Gold + Research

After you have thought about the area or areas you would like to visit and prospect, you will need to check with the governmental agencies and ask for information on the location. You can get information from literature as well. A good number of the states have a Bureau of Mines or Geology Surveys and these will be able to provide you with the information you need and where gold is more likely to be found in certain areas. These Bureaus can also help you by giving you information on prospecting geology and on how to recover gold. Make sure to look for the Bureau of Mines and Geology in your specific state. You just may be surprised on all the information you will be able to find out about gold panning. The offices of the Bureau and Land Management of the Department of Interior are also very helpful and can provide you with some good information.

Other very good places to go to are the state Bureaus of Tourism. There is always a great amount of tourists that come to the United States and the Bureaus of Tourism offer maps and other material that provide information on gold deposits, ghost towns, mining districts, and other sites and areas that tourists may be interested in visiting.

If you are interested in doing a more extensive research on everything there is to know about gold, you can go to the public libraries as well as the school libraries. Make sure you find out about the prospecting that has already been done in the area you are considering doing it as this will give you an idea of how good your chances are of recovering gold in the first place. Keep in mind that it is always better to look for the places that the gold ore was removed in a natural way rather than going to mines whose operations needed of complicated chemical processing to recover it. You will also need to find out what type of gold has been produced in the area you are considering.

A good option is to also talk to people that have experience in this and who have already worked in the area you are considering going to. Remember that you will have much more chances of finding gold after you have become familiar with the place you are going to be prospecting in. remember also that a key element to prospecting is having the necessary tools and equipment as these will help you be more successful. This is not a job that can be done without them, unless you just so happen to stumble across a big gold nugget, which does not happen every day.

While it is true that there are places that we have suggested are not the best to pan in, it is not the intention to discourage people from prospecting in the places they want to; the prospectors in the past used to use their sixth sense and many times they were right, however the intent is to avoid you from becoming frustrated if you do not find anything. After all, this is something that should be fun. Learning about prospecting and gaining new knowledge on this interesting and fascinating hobby is what it’s really all about.
