First Found Gold in California

Sutter then went back to the mill site with Marshall and when he realized there actually was a lot of gold, he started worrying that all his men would leave their jobs in order to mine the gold. He was able to talk to his men and made had them agree they would not tell anyone about the gold and to keep on working. The men did not betray him and continued working all the week and only mined the gold on Sundays.

At this point of the story is where we find out about Brannan. A few of the men started spending their gold in his store and he found out about the gold and where it was from these men. When Brannan found out about this he decided to go to San Francisco.

Brannan decided to spread the news about the gold and all those who were able to go jumped up and headed towards the gold fields. It was not much afterwards when there were only around a hundred people left in the city of San Francisco.

Sam Brannan became a very rich man overnight and his fortune continued increasing, however, Sutter’s started to suffer. Sutter was a nice man and tried to provide accommodation for the multitude of people that would go to the gold fields. At one point there were so many people it was impossible to accommodate them all.
