Equipment Needed for Prospecting
For prospectors that have already chosen a prospecting detector that is a appropriate for them, or if they have decided that a multipurpose detector is the right thing for them, there are now some additional and essential items that need to be included into their list. The experienced prospectors will most likely already have some of the digging tools and other accessories they have acquired for their hunting of valuables, however it is possible there are other more specialized ones that will be needed as well. Almost all of the items that will be mentioned can be bought from a metal detector dealer.
Headphones A good set of headphones are a very essential item in prospecting and all prospectors should have them. Mind you that a good set of headphones does not have to cost a fortune though. Go after the ones that are comfortable given that you will be using them for hours at a time on occasions and the last thing you need is heavy uncomfortable headphones. For prospectors that are working in hotter areas it is suggested to go after a lighter pair of headphones. There are some standard ones that are lighter in weight than other ones and then there are the typical office working ones which are the ones that go inside of the person’s ears and that go underneath the person’s chin as well for those that are going to be using hats. Prospectors that are going to be working in more regular climates can wear the ones that go over the ears. Another thing to consider is the type of area you are going to be working in given the noise factor. If there is a lot of noise around, such as a lot of wind etc, it will be more convenient to use the ones that have the ear cups to keep the noise out. However, be careful with these because there are some sounds you want to be able to hear such as rattlesnakes (that is, if you live or are going to be working in an area that has rattlesnakes). Headphones are highly recommended when prospecting with a detector because they allow the prospector to hear the faint sounds or the nuggets that are buried further inside the ground.
Headphones are recommended because they in addition allow the prospector to tune the detector to the faintest threshold hum which will make certain the best chances of the sensitivity level from the detector. Detector dealers will know which kind of headphones are good for using in the field and which are acceptable when for successful prospecting, however, you should still ask the dealer to give you a demonstration before you purchase them. You should test the headphones by detecting a nugget or a small size target. You should be able to hear a clear sound. While it is true that the loudness of the headphones is important, it’s even more important they sound clearly. Keep in mind that a lot of diverse sounds will be heard when using them on the field and it will be important to recognize which sound is which. There are headphones that have a high amount of impedance and that are recommended given this impendence is adequately balanced.
