Detection of Targets

Make sure to check every target that is detected. Then pinpoint the middle of the target as well as you can and look at the meter needle on your detector. You may need to pass over it a number of times, but if the target was non iron the need would sooner or later float over to the right. A rise on in the meter for ten passes is very common when it comes to a smaller piece of gold. In the case of a bigger piece it would normally set the meter needle to jump to the right when it is first passed over it. If the target were to be iron, the needle would then jolt to the left to the range of iron. This obviously will need to be confirmed by doing several passes. If the prospector is able to move the loop over his target once and again and the needle did not indicate it was a good target, then it probably is not worth it. If the target however seems to be strong, the prospector could in addition check it with the audio discriminator. If a strong signal was heard it was definitely highlighted on digging the out the target. Keep in mind also that when a needle moves very quickly from one extreme to the other it can also be an indication of mineralized hot rock and no attention should be paid to this. Once the prospector gets the hang of it, detecting and using the discriminator can be quite an interesting task to do. You can predict what you think the target is going to be however you should always dig it out anyways. By guessing and then digging everything to begin with, you can learn to trust on your discriminator and judgment and also know when not to rely on it. If the prospector is going to be working in areas on the top of ridges and mounds which are areas that the rains and winter washes off the overburden, he always has the option of working on the banks that the water erodes. The prospector can also work on the areas where there is crumbly bedrock and where crevices and rocks can be seen. These are the places where gold is produced. Make sure also to look under the limbs of the bushes etc, as these are places that other prospectors sometimes forget to check under. This is one of the good things about using a smaller sized loop. Just remember when doing prospecting with a detector to work your way slowly and to use a smaller size loop.
