Controlling Gold Findings

Sutter then set off to the mill site with Marshall and when he recognized there actually was a lot of gold, he became anxious that all his men would abandon their jobs so that they could mine the gold. He decided to talk to the men who were working for him and made them agree they would not fill anyone in about the discovery and asked them to continue working.

Sutter’s men were faithful and did not betray him; they would work during the week and were allowed to mine the gold on their day off which was Sundays.

So this is where Sam Brannan enters into the picture. Some of Sutter’s men began using the gold they had mined in Brannan’s store. Brannan soon found out after questioning the men about the gold where it was located. As soon as Brannan found out about this he decided to take a little trip to San Francisco.

Brannan who was a businessman decided to extend the news about the gold and obviously when the people heard about this they jumped up and headed towards the land of the gold. Soon enough there were only around one hundred people left in the city of San Francisco.

Sam Brannan as we explained earlier had placed a stock of mining equipment in his store and became an awfully rich man from one day to the next and his fortune continued to increase; Sutter on the other hand, started to run into a great deal of problems.

Sutter was a kind man and attempted to make available lodging and accommodation for the massive amounts of people that were invading the gold fields. The situation got to such a point in which no more people could be accommodated.
