Cenozoic Geology

Geology in Cenozoic Era lasted from 65 million years ago and is an era that merits a great deal of interest to gold prospectors due to the fact that during this Era’s two Periods, which were the Tertiary and the most recent one, the Quaternary, the rivers were formed and then reformed and they left massive deposits of placer gold that have not yet been exhausted.

The Tertiary Period is split into five different Periods. The oldest one being Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene. This was the time the first placental mammals came about and finished with the manifestation of big mammals.

The Quaternary Period started with the Pleistocene Period and brings the geological history of the world up to date with the Recent Epoch. Throughout the Pleistocene Period is it thought that man first appeared on the earth however, there are studies that have indicated that man may have appeared on the earth before this epoch.

The Cenozoic Era is manifested with a great amount of animal life as well as plant life and most of them had the form we know of today. This was also a time of a lot of geological activity in the earth. A lot of the great oil fields in California, Texas and Louisiana were found in Tertiary rocks.

There was also volcanic activity and big shifts in the crust formed the Coast Range of California and the Cascade mountains of Washington and Oregon. A lot of the coal that was mined in the United States comes from the Tertiary age and the gold, silver and copper deposits came from Mexico, Peru and Bolivia and the Rocky Mountains of the United States were formed.

The last portion of the Pliocene Epoch started the beginning of the glaciers, which were huge sheets of ice that covered a great deal of North America, Europe and Siberia. The start of the modern geological history matches pretty much with the last great Ice Age, which was around 11,000 years ago.
