Basic Mineralogy

When it comes to learning about the science of mineralogy, it is not necessary for weekend prospectors to learn a great amount of geology, so don’t panic. This is not as complicated as it would seem and we have made sure to reduce the amount of information and only give out the definitions that are more commonly used and generalize in certain areas. Being aware and understanding of some of the basic facts will help you be able to grab hold of the geological information in your own region and area.

One of the most vital things you should learn about geology is the way the geologists think about time. Keep in mind that when geologists use terms such as millions of years for a mineral to have been formed etc, they look at it as somewhat of a short time. To the rest of us a couple million years is a ridiculously long time.
