Awakening District
The Awakening district located around 45 miles northwest of Winnemucca in the Slumbering Hills. Mining began in 1910 in this area, and there was still a minor amount of production of gold and silver from 1912 to 1918. In 1935 the discovery of the Jumbo mine started up a stage of large scale mining in the area. The early production in the area is not something that is recorded however from 1935 through 1959, a total amount of 25,648 ounces of gold was produced. The metamorphosed muds and impure sandstones, which now consist of slates and schists that most likely come from the Mesozoic age, can be seen in most of the area. Almost all of the ore deposits are gold bearing quartz veins in the slates and almost of the veins are under one foot in thickness and have a good number of branches. The Jumbo deposit, on the other hand, is totally different from the other veins of the district. Its most distinctive feature is the profuse adularia and quartz that can be found in the gangue. The veins are small in size in the area and irregularly distributed.
Dutch Flat district This area has provided some lucky prospectors with good size nuggets therefore; nugget shooting as well as dry washing can be done here. Placer mining is normally done here and close to ten thousand ounces has been reported. The deposits can be found on the west slopes of the Hot Springs Mountains. Those interested in visiting the area can take the gravel road to north out of Golconda to the road that is on the outer south end of the mountains to the Dutch Flat Diggings.
Potosi district Potosi is somewhat of a new mining district. The first known of and recorded production in the area occurred in 1938. Potosi is mainly a lode mining area and it has some fairly rich veins in it. Those interested in visiting the area can take highway 18 north from highway 80 just about fifteen miles to a road that goes north, here you will need to keep on going ten miles until you get to the Gretchell Mine. You can also search the area for appealing outcroppings.
Winnemuca district Between 1875 and 1900 this area had a few significant mineral finds. But in 1900, gold was discovered at Tonopah and a new gold rush was on. There were over one hundred gold rushes that occurred over the following ten years. In 1907, the legendary National mine opened, and this caused another boom in the area. At the moment Winnemucca is still a main trade center for rural northwestern Nevada. Not only does this area have gold mines, but also potato fields, cattle ranches, and alfalfa fields. Other resources in the county consist of silver, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, iron, barite, clay, and uranium. There is in addition a big mercury deposit. The last exclusive mercury mine in the United States was situated close to the northern border of Humboldt County. There are also a good amount of deserted mines that can be interesting to visit in the area.
