Adjustable Anchors
Adjustable anchors are a lot better in most cases and they can acquire different forms. In many occasions all that you will need to do is set up two ropes on either side of the stream and shorten one while the other one is adjusted to move the dredge on upstream or across it. When the area that is getting dredged is right across the face of a relatively wide stream a line can be suspended over the stream and then attached to tow strong and firm anchor points. Instead of it being attached to the dredge in a permanent way the line can be run through two eyebolts on the back part of the dredge and it can then be pushed across the stream while you are working.
This is a quick way of moving the dredge but you will need to be careful to not dump the dredge into the stream by pushing it across the water current too quickly.
One of the best things to use for adjustable anchors is a chain because the links will delay sideways movement of the operation of the dredge. You can also use snap on clips so as to maintain it in one same spot.
Another thing that can be used for these anchors is aircraft cable as pushing the dredge across the stream will not be complicated this way. You can bolt on clamps that are made to hold a loop steady and this can be bought in almost all larger hardware stores. It can then be used to be attached on both sides of the dredge to keep it from wondering away while it is dredging. You can also uses rope but it does not work as well and if you do make sure to have two safety lines that can be shortened or lengthened so that the dredge does not move from side to side.
Moveable or adjustable dredges are usually not used except when there are two or three men in operation and when the work is going to be occurring for a length of time like a week or more. Another important point to always keep in mind is to not allow the dredge to be left in the stream over night.
After the dredging area has been defined and all the positions of the dredging operation have been agreed on, there is still one more thing that needs to be done to make sure everything is safe during the launch and during the dredging operation. You must always make sure to secure the dredge with a safety line that is independent from the anchor lines. Even though it is not always possible, you should attach the safety line to a dredge component that is not attached to another anchoring point. This is important in case the anchoring points fail, and this will offer you double protection from having the dredge float away.
